Victor’s Wolverhampton Selections – Thursday October 20th 2022

Hi all,

I wasn’t going to put anything up on Thursday. However, I have looked at the feature race at Wolverhampton on Thursday evening for the Daily Punt so I thought I would share it with those who may not have read it.

Wolverhampton

7:15 – Eleven are set to go to post for what’s the race of the day. You can make a case for all of the 11 runners in this Class 2 sprint handicap. However, I’m happy to take on early bird favourite Bergerac.

Of those at the front end of the market I prefer Spangled Mac. The 3-year-old had a cracking September winning four times. Not so good on his last two starts but he’s hopefully benefitted from a 42-day break after a busy spell of racing. Drown out widest in 11 isn’t helpful but he will be dropped in and will likely be ridden for luck. Hollie Doyle in the saddle for the first time and the George Boughey yard has its runners in good form.

Princess Shabnam makes her tapeta debut but has won on the polytrack.  A Pontefract Listed winner two starts back. The filly disappointed on return from a short break break in a Group 3 at Ascot 19-days ago. Adam Farragher takes 5lb off the top-weights back but its still a tough ask for the filly.

Hierarchy a useful juvenile hasn’t really gone on from a decent seasonal return at Ascot in the spring. He’s got a handy draw in stall 4 and did win over C&D on his racecourse debut last season. Doubts though about his present wellbeing given we haven’t seen him for 105 days.

May Sonic is arguably the best handicapped horse in the race. However, the 6-year-old disappointed on two starts in the spring. Looked in need of the run on return from a 5 month absence when 7th of 9 at Chelmsford last month. The yard is going well, and he’s got a handy draw in stall 2. Decent each way claims if bouncing back to something like his best.

Verdict:

I’m torn between Spangled Mac and taking an each-way punt on the outsider of the field May Sonic. The latter has looked lifeless so far this year but the stables in form and they have booked Tom Marquand so maybe he’s been showing at home that a return to form may be forthcoming.

May Sonic – 1pt each way – 16/1 @ Bet365, Ladbrokes & Coral – The latter are paying a generous 4 places.
Spangled Mac – 1pt win – 6/1 @ Bet365, Coral and Ladbrokes.

Cheers

John
