Victor’s Sunday Preview – November 19th 2023

Hi all,

It’s the final day of Cheltenham’s November Meeting on Sunday with the big betting being the valuable Greatwood Handicap Hurdle (3:30).  Sixteen have been declared for this year’s race which has £56,270 on offer to the winner. The other highlight of a seven race card is the Grade 2 Shloer Chase (2:55).  Just four have been declared but they are: Jonbon, Edwardstone, Editeur Du Gite and Nube Negra. The first three are all Grade 1 winners and although Nube Negra jas yet to win a Grade 1 (0-7 in the Grade) he has won the last two running’s of the race.

Besides the Cheltenham action we also have the valuable Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan (2:30) and BetGoodwin Southern National Handicap Chase at Fontwell (2:04).

ITV Racing are covering four races from Cheltenham and the Southern National on a five race programme on Sunday afternoon.

Inside today’s preview I’ve looked at the five races on ITV. Plus, I have had the chance to preview the Troytown Handicap Chase.

Victor’s Saturday Preview – November 18th 2023

Hi all,

The Paddy Power Gold Cup (2.20), one of the highlights of the early months of the jumps season. It’s also the highlight of Day 2 of Cheltenham’s November Meeting.

ITV Racing are covering four races from Cheltenham and the two Listed races from Lingfield’s all weather card this afternoon.

As ever I’m looking at all six of the ITV races. But I also have selections from a race on the Cheltenham card that isn’t on ITV.

Victor’s Friday Preview – October 16th 2023

Hi all,

The first selections of what had been a quiet week on the betting front but I will be making up for that over the next three days.

Inside today’s preview I have gone through the card at Cheltenham and my selections and betting advice can be found at the end of the main piece.

Victor’s Sunday Preview – November 12th 2023

The Listed Brown Lad Handicap Hurdle (2:00) is feature race of an eight race card at Naas on Sunday.  There’s also an interesting card at Sandown even though only 53 horses have been declared for the seven races.

Victor’s Saturday Preview – November 11th 2023

Hi all,

Aintree’s Grand National Course passed a Friday morning inspection so Saturday’s Grand Sefton can be run over the National Fences. Eleven are set to go to post for the Aintree feature and although field sizes are much better than they were at this time last year. I sense a reluctance from some of the bigger trainers to risk their better horses on very testing ground.  You can understand why. Would you really want a horse to have to hard a race at such an early stage in the season when they have bigger prizes in mind.

ITV racing are covering the best of the action from Aintree, Wincanton and Newcastle where the November Handicap rescheduled from Doncaster is the feature race of an eight race card.

Victor’s Exeter Preview – Friday November 10th 2023

Hi all,

There’s some good racing on offer on Friday at Down Royal & Dundalk but today’s preview focuses on Exeter where the highlight of a seven race card is the Betway Haldon Gold Cup Handicap Chase (3:30), which has £47,552 on offer to the winner and is the most valuable race either side of the Irish Sea.

Besides the feature race there’s an interesting enough undercard. Albert Bartlett winner Stay Away Fay makes his chase debut in the ‘Future Stars’ Silver Bowl Novices’ Chase (2:55). He faces four rivals including the Dan Skelton trained Grey Dawning who was a useful novice hurdler himself last season and should progress further over fences.

It used to be a real midweek treat to have the Haldon Gold Cup meeting run on Tuesday. Then the course management switched it to a Friday because they got live coverage on ITV. Well, there’s no ITV Racing this year and the meeting has continued in its new Friday slot. Return to a Tuesday fixture please Exeter!

Victor’s Newbury Preview – Thursday November 9th 2023

Hi all,

It was almost a fantastic Wednesday with Baldomero going so close in the Kempton feature yesterday evening.

The most valuable race on Thursday is the Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase (2:50) at Clonmel. Just the four are set to go to post but they include double Ryanair Chase winner Allaho. The 9-year-old returns to the track for the first time since winning a Grade 1 (3m) at the 2022 Punchestown Festival. If he’s retained most of his old ability, he should be able to see of stablemate Janidil and his biggest rival could turn out be French Dynamite. He’s the clear class act at his best but at 1/3 after problems with his spleen I can happily sit this one out.

Newbury

There’s a decent enough card at Newbury this afternoon for its first jumps meeting of the season. It should be an entertaining and informative card. The going on Wednesday afternoon was being described as good to soft which is much softer than 12 months ago when it was closer to good to firm.

There are four handicaps on the card, and I have had a look at all four of them.

Victor’s Melbourne Cup Preview

Hi all,

Ignoring the Breeders’ Cup, it was a good weekend and start to the month for the service.  I wouldn’t normally be having selections on a Monday during the winter months but today is an exception.

At 4am tomorrow morning it’s the race that stops the nation the Melbourne Cup. Before the pandemic It’s a race I used to stay up and loved to have a crack at it. For the last few years, I haven’t bothered to watch it live but I still like to have a play in the race.

Victor’s Sunday Preview – November 5th 2023

Hi all,

The Sunday highlights are the Paddy Power Cork Grand National Handicap Chase (3:15).  Another smallish field for a valuable handicap chase in Ireland as was the case with last month’s Munster National. Unlike the latter race just three are trained by Gordon Elliott. It’s a race that he’s twice since 2018.

Meanwhile this side of the Irish at Carlisle we have the normally informative Listed Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase (2:30). Six were declared for the race but two of them, Beauport and Monbeg Genius ran at Ascot on Saturday and are unlikely to run. Bass Rock won here on seasonal return last November and has only been out of the first two once on five starts at Carlisle. I don’t think we have seen the best of the 7-year-old over fences and he might be able to cause a bit of a surprise.
