Victor’s Friday Picks – March 3rd 2023

Hi all,

My first selections since Saturday and the first of the new month. There’s no action at Meydan today with the racing switching to ’Super Saturday’. In truth I almost left today blank too but I didn’t want to go into the weekend totally fresh.

Doncaster

3:10 – Mr Muldoon seems likely to run his race and is feasibly handicapped if his jumping holds up which it didn’t when a 2 length 2nd of 7 at Musselburgh last month. Venetia Williams saddled last year’s winner and I think she’s got a fair chance of back to back successes with Brainstorm. The 11-year-old hasn’t been seen since pulling up at Fakenham in April. Prior to that he had jumped well enough when a 1 ¼ length 2nd of 7 to Guetapan Collonges at Market Rasen. Goes well off a lay off and although both his hurdle wins have come on soft ground, he should be fine on today’s surface.

Brainstorm – 1pt win – 9/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes

Dundalk

It’s not often that Dundalk provides the feature race, but it does today. The Listed Patton Stakes (7:30) run over a mile sees the return to action of the Aidan O’Brien trained Cairo. The 3-year-old holds English & Irish 2,000 Guineas entries as well as an Irish Derby entry.  Two from 4 last season including a Group 3 at Leopardstown in October. The colt must give 3lb and more to his seven rivals but Ryan Moore comes over to ride and I will be surprised if he can’t give it away.

8:00 – Might And Mercy is handily weighted on the best of her form and has to be respected on her return from a 105-day break and for the application of the first time cheekpieces.

Macadam’s Rock was back to winning ways two starts back and the dual C&D winner was a respectable 2 lengths 4th of 14 over C&D two weeks ago. Seems likely to be in the mix at the finish with Declan McDonogh booked.

Rocky Dreams, a five time course winner including C&D, was a good 3rd of 8 here (1m) 7-days ago. Drop back to 7f isn’t an inconvenience and he’s now back down to his last winning mark. The 6-year-old is 3-8 when racing within 7-days of his last start and granted a decent pace to chase should give another good account himself.  Preference is for Rocky Dreams, but I can’t say I’m not tempted by Macadam’s Rock if he was around 7/1.

Rocky Dreams – 1pt win – 9/1 @ Bet365.

Cheers

John
