Somerset National Selection – Thursday 16th 2020

Hi all,

Another two selections for you today. It’s the Somerset National at Wincanton and there’s a well handicapped horse at Ludlow who will take all beating if bouncing back to his form of two seasons back.

Hopefully Wincanton will survive an early morning inspection although the signs don’t look hopeful with standing water on parts of the track on Wednesday afternoon.  If they race today, I have a selection for the Somerset National.

Wincanton

3:40 – The 3m 2 1/2 f of the Somerset National will take some getting on the forecast heavy ground. One runner who won’t have any problem with either the going or the trip is Dawson City who really needs further than 3m 2f these days.

Twice a winner of the Devon National over 3m 6 ½ f, the 11-year-old is an out and out stayer. Down the field on both this season starts means he’s dropped down to a mark just 1lb higher than for season’s Devon National win. That race will probably be his target again, but he was third in this two years ago and another bold show should be forthcoming from a horse that seems to excel in these regional nationals when he gets the right underfoot conditions.

1pt each way – Dawson City – 10/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes

Ludlow

2:20 – Town Parks, trained by Kerry Lee, is now 6lb lower than when winning at Hereford two years ago. All three of his career wins have come on soft or heavy ground so problem with underfoot conditions and he has won over hurdles at the course in the past.

The 9-year-old could well have gone at the game given he’s performed badly on two of his three starts this season. However, he’s worth one final chance off a tempting mark and his trainer had a good winner at Wetherby on Saturday.

1pt win – Town Parks – 5/1 @ Bet365

Cheers

John
